Patch My PC – Mass Update Third Party Software Automatically

In today’s world, we are seeing malware writers focusing on weaknesses in third party applications such as Flash and Java rather than just targeting the operating system. Patch My PC is designed to help secure a machine against the vulnerabilities of having outdated third party software installed. Patch My PC is a small, portable and freeware application that will scan for outdated third party software and update them automatically. Some of the common software it will check include Adobe Reader, Adobe Flash, Adobe Air, Mozilla Firefox, Oracle Java, Apple QuickTime, Apple iTunes, Skype, Chrome, Microsoft Updates and much more.

Ultra Virus Killer, also known as UVK, is a free and portable application designed to help users detect and remove malware. UVK acts as a swiss army knife of malware removal as it contains similar functionality to a range of computer technician software use such as Process Explorer, Autoruns, Unlocker, Windows Repair and more.

The strength of this application is not just its ability to help you remove the offending malware, but repair the damaged Windows install afterwards. For example, the application allows you to create scripts that will reset the hosts file and DNS, Reset IE, Reset Group Policy, Fix .exe extensions and much more.

While I was researching UVK, I discovered that the creator of UVK is a Technibble forum regular with some sizeable threads about it.

A Peek At Other Computer Technicians Workbenches #3

A work bench is something that most Computer Technicians will need and checking out other Computer Technicians workbenches is a great way to get inspiration for our own setups. Even if you have already completed your own workbench, it is nice to see how other technicians are doing it. We haven’t done one of these in a while (#1, #2) so it is time for #3 in our Computer Technicians workbenches series.

This is a few pictures of our shop… And yes before you ask that is the same stuff they use on metal roof tops. We cut it down and made it the front of the counter, the added benefit is that we put magnet backs on our cards and people just take them when they want them.. People love the fact they can see us working on their computers.

I’ve always worked out of a spare bedroom in my house but 4 months ago my 2nd child was born and it was decided by my wife and I that the office should be given to my older son and turned back into a bedroom and the youngest have the older sons current bedroom.

In my garden I have a brick outhouse that has been used as a shed. It’s not the biggest space in the world (10 foot x 6 foot) but as the majority of my work is carried out on site I don’t need a huge area so I decided to have it converted to an office.

Moved to a new location this year, built it all the cabinets and benches, and put up some new signage. Getting ready to launch a new website at the end of the month as well.

If you read any tech blogs, chances are you have seen an ad for a Registry Cleaner at some point.
Registry Cleaners are an interesting issue because some Computer Technicians do a ‘registry clean’ as part of every system cleanup they do while others avoid them like the plague.

What do you think of registry cleaners?
Do you make use of one? If you do, which one? Do you see any noticeable improvements?
Do you believe the Windows registry never needs a ‘cleanup’ and you are more likely cause more problems than you will fix?

Brands You Love Hate

Computer Technicians tend have a special insight into the reliability of computer hardware. Big brands can spend millions boosting their brand but in the end it comes down to the Computer Technicians who really see what hardware lasts and what doesn’t.

In this article I would like to ask you, the reader, what brands of hardware do you love and what brands of hardware you hate and why you feel that way towards them. This can include peripherals like Printers, Keyboards and Mice.
