Mozilla to Move Firefox 3 to beta 5

(TheForceField.Net ) March 8, 2008 — Mozilla announced Tuesday that it would add one more beta to Firefox 3 in order to work out remaining bugs and ensure browser compatibility. The announcement was made after the development team met March 4 and determined a fifth beta was needed.

In an entry in MozillaZine News , Mike Beltzner, the company's chief interface designer said code freeze was scheduled for Tuesday, March 18th at 11:59 AM PST, which indicates the beta could be released within the first week of April. Beta 4 went into code freeze last week and is expected to be released sometime next week.

"This additional beta will ensure that changes which may affect website compatibility and changes which affect the user experience will get exposure to a wider audience for feedback and regression testing.", Beltzner said.

Beltzner indicated would likely be the final beta. "All P1 blockers are to be fixed for Firefox 3 Beta 5.", Beltzner said. "After code freeze, we expect a shorter baking period before handing off to the Build and QA teams for release."

Survey: Most Senior Executives Say We

With Few Exceptions, Senior Executives Say Their Companies Will be Unable to Avoid the Effects of the Recession, According to Boston Consulting Group Survey

Executives Concur that Recession Could Provide Opportunities, Especially for Market Share Gains But Findings Suggest Companies Arent Taking the Right Steps to Capture Opportunities

CHICAGO (Business Wire EON/PRWEB ) March 6, 2008 — Most U.S. business leaders believe the economy is in a recession now, or that one is inevitable within six months. Thats according to a survey conducted by The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) of 101 senior decision makers at U.S. companies with at least $500 million in annual revenues.

Almost every executive (94.9%) who said that a recession is likely believes his or her company will not be able to avoid the effects of the recession.

Companies Already Feeling Recession Squeeze

A total of 53.4% of executives believe that were in a recession now (37.6%), or that we will be within six months (15.8%). While the majority (71.2%) of those who believe were in or near recession say they base their view in part on macro-economic indicators, theyre also feeling the effects in their businesses: 55.9% say their view is based in part on a slowdown in sales, and 30.5% say its based in part on a slowdown in payments to their companies.

Going into the Recession With the Right Perspective

We believe companies should approach signs of a recession as an opportunity to prepare. Downturns magnify relative strengths and weaknesses, so companies that gird themselves intelligently can leverage a change in the dynamics of an industry something that always happens in a recession so that it works in their favor, said Hal Sirkin, global leader of BCGs Operations practice, which spearheaded the research.

In the last recession, 30% of the companies that had been among the top 10 players in their sectors dropped off that list. So, viewed the right way, a downturn presents a strategic opportunity to leapfrog the competition, rather than simply posing a threat, he added.

Recession Trap vs. Recession Opportunity

Indeed, most executives 57.6% said the recession will present opportunities (though 42.4% said it wont). Of those who said it will, 64.7% said the recession will lead to chances for market share gains; 47.1% said it will be an opportunity to implement changes with less internal resistance; and 29.4% said it will provide M&A opportunities.

But Companies that Believe Theyre Prepared May Still Fall Into the Recession Trap

Nearly three-quarters (74.5%) of executives say their companies have taken measures to prepare for the downturn, and 81.3% say theyre at least somewhat confident 23.7% are very confident that their company is better prepared than competitors.

Unfortunately, many of these companies are probably less prepared than they believe and headed for the recession trap. Based on our research, most of the measures these companies say theyre taking 80% of the steps, in fact are conventional and related to cost cutting, said Sirkin, a Chicago-based BCG senior partner. By mainly focusing on cost reduction, theyre not taking advantage of the opportunities a recession can provide. What they need to do is pull out all the stops now so they can move ahead of their competitors soon and be well positioned when business softens further.

The Right Steps to Being Prepared

Mr. Sirkin suggests that companies should begin immediately to determine and measure their risk levels in a downturn; sharpen their downturn radars by setting up early warning systems that look for danger and opportunity; get in shape by doing things like building collaborative partnerships, licensing agreements and outsourcing relationships that reduce risk, keep costs variable and lead to new opportunities; think and act counter-cyclically by taking such steps as giving more service to profitable customers or target accounts and increasing marketing and R&D investments; streamline supply chains; free working capital to reduce debt and interest expense; and get everyone involved in making the most of the downturn by creating a were all in this together environment.

In a recession, everyone feels short-term pain. But companies that successfully approach a recession as an opportunity have the potential to realize long-term gain, said Sirkin.

Note to journalists: Hal Sirkin at The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) is available to discuss the findings in more depth and elaborate on BCGs recommendations for organizations willing to take steps to prepare to leverage a downturn.

Canonical Announces General Availability of Systems Management and Monitoring Tool

Canonical, the commercial sponsor of Ubuntu, announced today the general availability of Canonical Landscape, the systems management and monitoring tool for Ubuntu. Ubuntu users are invited to register for a free trial.

LONDON (PRWEB) March 5, 2008 — Canonical, the commercial sponsor of Ubuntu, announced today the general availability of Canonical Landscape, the systems management and monitoring tool for Ubuntu.

Available for its commercial support customers and as a standalone commercial service, Landscape will provide the growing number of businesses deploying multiple instances of Ubuntu on servers and desktops the means to more easily manage and maintain their systems. Landscape significantly reduces the cost of ownership and maximizes the efficiency of resources for any Ubuntu deployment.

"We are committed to making Ubuntu the right choice for business," said Mark Shuttleworth, founder of the Ubuntu project. "I am delighted that the feedback from the beta programme indicates that Landscape meets that commitment. We challenged the development team to build a tool that was simple to use but powerful for support customers and they delivered. I expect Landscape to drive many more large-scale Ubuntu deployments."

"We have been very impressed by what we have seen in Landscape," said Fredrik Jonsson of ASCI Sweden AB, a participant in the beta programme. "Ubuntu already has an impressive reputation for ease of use, and the growing ecosystem of packages available makes it a great choice for businesses today. Landscape looks like the ideal tool for both managing and monitoring business-scale deployments."

About Landscape
Landscape provides users with a hosted web interface on which all machines are registered. From this single interface, packages and security updates are deployed to the entire network of servers and/or desktops with a single click. Additionally a wealth of monitoring data is provided graphically to the administrator showing process and resource use as well as flagging any available security fixes for the system.

System Management Features:

  • Manage many machines at once: All operations in Landscape can be applied to one or more machines with the same ease.
  • Group machines: Not all machines need to form a single group, machines can be split into multiple groups for different requirements but all can be administered through a single interface.
  • Manage packages across the network: Landscape allows the user to see a package inventory for each computer and allow administrators to install, upgrade, or remove packages from one or more computers.
  • Integrate custom repositories: For users maintaining their own repository — even internally — Landscape can report on and manage the packages in it.
  • Manage users easily: System users may all be managed from a central interface, and may have actions delivered to be performed in one or more systems in a comfortable way.
  • Handle security updates efficiently: Landscape highlights those package upgrades with security fixes (with links to detailed information) ensuring any vulnerabilities are dealt with as quickly as possible.
  • Support disconnected users: Users who disconnect from the network can be handled asynchronously with updates provided when they next get online.
  • System Monitoring Features:

  • Understand system resource usage quickly: Landscape constantly monitors the system's health and performance, and graphs that data in ways that enable a user to quickly pinpoint bottlenecks or other problem areas.
  • Manage processes centrally: A simple web interface displays all the recently active processes running across all systems and enables users to search and manage those centrally.
  • Maintain a detailed hardware inventory: Landscape removes the complexity from hardware inventory by showing complete and easy to understand hardware information for all your systems.
  • Simplify security audits: Auditing and security are simplified with Landscape's detailed history logs that display actions performed by all administrators, even if they were performed locally on the machines themselves without using Landscape.
  • Access full package information: The convenient web interface allows browsing of all packages installed, available, and available for upgrading, on all registered machines, including security notices.
  • Enhanced Support Experience:

  • Streamline exchange of information with the Canonical support team: Canonical support experts receive read-only information on hardware and configurations that will allow them to more rapidly diagnose and resolve tickets.
  • Access the integrated support portal: Administrators can log, view and track support cases right in Landscape, thus providing all management needs in a single convenient location.

Pricing and Availability
Ubuntu users are invited to register for a free trial at www.canonical.com/landscape/register. Trials will be restricted to users who register five or more machines on the system. The free trial lasts for 60 days. Landscape is available as a stand-alone option without commercial support from Canonical priced at $150 per node with discounting available on larger volumes.

It is possible to get the goodness of Landscape even if commercial support is not immediately required. Users can apply for details at: www.canonical.com/landscape/register.

‘Vista Capable’ Isn’t, Lawsuit Alleges; Microsoft Exec E-mails Agree

(TheForceField.net ) March 3, 2008 — Microsoft is in a class action lawsuit regarding their "Vista Capable" campaign and they seem to be blowing the whistle on themselves.

The lawsuit filed against Microsoft alleged that the company mislead users by claiming new PCs built with the minimum requirements for Windows Home Basic as Windows Vista Capable when they were not capable of running Windows Home Premium. On February 22 a Seattle Federal judge allowed the lawsuit class action status.

The court unsealed Microsoft internal e-mails February 27. These documents were  used by the plaintiffs to support their case against Redmond. The e-mails outlined frustration by Microsoft's executives with Vista as well, particularly in regards to availability of drivers, including graphics drivers.

Microsoft admitted Vista had requirements that were beyond the capabilities of some low end or what the industry refers to as "junk PCs" and Redmond responded to the problem by lowering the requirements for hardware to qualify as Windows Vista Capable, according to the e-mails.

Mike Nash, the Vice President of Windows Product Development posted his own experiences with Vista in an e-mail. "I personally got burned by the Intel 915 chipset issue on a laptop that I PERSONALLY (eg with my own $$$). Are we seeing this from a lot of customers? I know that I chose my laptop (a Sony TX770P) because it had the Vista logo and was pretty disappointed that it not only wouldn't run Glass, but more importantly wouldn't run Movie Maker (I guess that is being addressed). I now have a $2100 email machine.", he wrote.

Others expressed frustration as well. Jon Shirley, former president and member of Microsoft's Board of Directors wrote "I upgraded one of the two machines I use a lot to Vista. The most persistent and so far hardest to fix issues are both with MSN products, Portfolio in MSN Money and Music (downloads that I had bought in the past)."

Shirley also had trouble finding drivers for his Epson printer. "I cannot understand with a product this long in creation why there is such a shortage of drivers", he added.

Jim Allchin, former Co-President, Platform and Services Division, in another email wrote "We really botched this."

The complete set of e-mails can be downloaded here vista_emails.pdf .
