Why Websites Fail: Websites are Failing Small Businesses

Research carried out by UK-based web company Netflare Ltd reveals the true extent of website failure in start-ups and small businesses in which only 23% of those surveyed reported any measure of success. This is despite the UK having the most active online population of any country in Europe with around 21 million logging on every day.

Research carried out by UK-based web company Netflare Ltd reveals the true extent of website failure in start-ups and small businesses in which only 23% of those surveyed reported any measure of success. This is despite the UK having the most active online population of any country in Europe with around 21 million logging on every day.

The main findings of the phone surveys of a representative sample of small businesses are;
Most businesses surveyed said they want their website to increase sales, yet only 23% achieved any measure of success. 25% do not have any idea what sales are generated by their website.
On average, the last update of their website was ten months ago. 23% have not updated their website since its launch, on average 4 years ago.
38% spend no money updating their website.

Jon Beal, Managing Director of Netflare says "it's not surprising businesses are wasting the potential of their websites, they lack the knowledge, marketing and support to reap the benefits of this new marketplace."

Beal also reports that this is typical of businesses who seek help from him with their website creation, design and marketing. "In my experience, businesses do not measure the success of their website; worse do not even know what or how to measure. Because they don't even know if it's working, they are not investing in their website, and yet they are still paying monthly fees for failing websites, because they feel they ought to have one."

Netflare has created a way out of this spiral of website decline by publishing four free reports it calls "The 4 Pillars of Website Success" and by launching its Business Web Factory service that uses a "7 Week Blueprint to Success" email course to guide business owners step by step through the whole process.

"The 4 Pillars of Website Success" are a series of free reports in pdf format that detail;
Knowledge – provides business owners with the confidence that they can self manage their own website and keep it up to date with valued content.
Marketing – It is vital to grasp the basic concepts of marketing or the website will inevitably fail.
Ownership – Only by taking ownership and control of their website can a business owner hope to get the most from it.
Support – This final report shows how with the right marketing, design and technical support a business can achieve website success.

"We've created these 4 pillars to demonstrate that with a purpose, your website can produce measurable results to become a significant contributor of new sales to your business", explains Beal.

He continues, "Business owners who want to break free from the circle of decline and start building the success of their website on these 4 pillars of knowledge, ownership, marketing, and support can download these reports, from www.businesswebfactory.com and by clicking on the 'FREE REPORT' link.

Quotes from Sam Masiello, Director of Threat Management, MX Logic:

This year has in some ways bucked the trend as weve seen a number of unusual developments just in the first two months of the year with MBR Rootkits, Drive-by Pharming, and high spam volumes, which normally drop off after the first of the year.

This shows that spammers are as committed as ever to exploiting the vulnerabilities of email wherever and whenever they can, so its especially important to be vigilant about security.

While these trends and events are important to follow, using our MX Logic Email Defense Service can virtually eliminate the need to worry about them since it provides a flexible architecture with multiple layers of protection that are constantly updated.

$80 Tiny Computer Runs Linux, Development Tools, Controls, and Servers

US embedded hardware OEM KwikByte is shipping a low-cost, tiny embedded system designed for general purpose computing, embedded controls, and database/web servers. KwikByte demonstrated the system running open-source packages such as Apache, MySQL, and PostgreSQL within a Debian environment.

Tempe, AZ (PRWEB) March 12, 2008 — US embedded hardware OEM KwikByte demonstrated a complete, embedded Debian environment and applications running on a power-conscious, microcontroller-based system. The system is designed for general purpose computing, embedded controls, remote monitoring, and server applications.

News Image

The board used for the demonstration, KwikByte’s KB9260, is based on the AT91SAM9260 microcontroller. The controller’s small footprint reduces system size while the low power consumption allows the board to be powered by Power over Ethernet – PoE also known as IEEE 802.3af. By using PoE, a single Ethernet connection to the board can provide power as well as network connectivity. This minimizes facility installation costs.

The board supports minimal configurations like BusyBox and uClibc as well as larger installations like Debian. The Debian development kit was shown running a controls application built and debugged on the board (screen shot attached). No tools were required on a host PC as the system exports a virtual display over Ethernet. This configuration resides entirely within on-board Flash. The dev kit includes schematics and the board ships with recent Linux kernel, currently 2.6.24.

The number of general purpose I/O (GPIO) combined with programmable clocks, serial channels, analog input channels, and timer/counter/PWM channels make it ideal for embedded controls applications. Additionally, the USB host power supply was designed to provide extra power for most USB hard drives. Applications that require very large storage space are only limited by the size of an external hard disk and the entire system can be powered over the Ethernet cable.

System Details

  • AT91SAM9260, ARM926EJ-S 200MHz
  • 32/64 MB SDRAM
  • 8 MB boot Flash
  • 256 MB – 2 GB NAND Flash
  • 10/100 Ethernet
  • 1 x USB 2.0 host port
  • 35 x GPIO, max
  • 3 x serial channels including debug serial
  • 4 x programmable clocks
  • 3 x timer/counter/PWM channels
  • 4 x analog input ADC channels
  • Power options: Power over Ethernet, on-board voltage regulator, or external power supply
  • Size: 3.1” x 3.1”

Availability
The KB9260 is shipping now with volume pricing of $79.99. A WinCE port is also available.

Wireless Platforms Key to Joined-up Healthcare

The market for wireless and mobile phone based healthcare platforms will grow rapidly as health providers seek ways to drive down costs. According to a report published this week, by Cambridge UK based research company Wireless Healthcare, mobile communications platforms provide a relatively simple means of connecting diagnostic medical devices to the electronic medical records systems and advanced Health 2.0 based services being developed by companies such as Google and Revolution Health.

Cambridge, UK (PRWEB) March 11, 2008 — The market for wireless and mobile phone based healthcare platforms will grow rapidly as health providers seek ways to drive down costs.

In the report, "Wireless eHealth Platforms", Wireless Healthcare identifies two main types of platforms; those, such as BlueAid, which are being built from the ground up as healthcare communications platforms and others, such as IBM's WebSphere, which are conventional ecommerce platforms that can be customised to support ehealth applications. The report notes that a number of IT vendors are keen to bring to the healthcare sector technologies and business processes that they have already used to increase efficiency and reduce costs within the financial services and travel industries.

Peter Kruger, Senior Analyst with Wireless Healthcare, points out: "While banks and airlines have managed to radically reduce costs by deploying technology that lets the customer carry out transactions online, healthcare providers have yet to realise similar savings by providing online heart monitoring and blood glucose checks. These types of services, which free up clinicians by automating routine tasks, are essential if we want recession-proof healthcare services".

The report sees an important role for platforms that are flexible enough to allow medical devices that use a range of wireless standards, such as Bluetooth, 802.11 or ZigBee to communicate with a mobile phone or wireless healthcare hub. It also notes that the platform market will gain increased traction as search vendors and healthcare portals extend their health orientated services by adding support for mobile phone based consumer healthcare services, such a diet management and fitness monitoring. As Kruger notes, "We believe the market will be watching the forthcoming launch of Qualcomm's ehealth platform, LifeComm, to see how effectively it links mobile phone based healthcare applications to next generation back office healthcare infrastructure".

Apple's iPhone coupled with 123Together.com's two-way wireless synchronization with hosted Microsoft Exchange Server will allow executives, sales people and other mobile employees to be in touch with the office no matter where they are, increasing productivity and responsiveness to their colleagues and customers.

"We welcome Apple's decision to support ActiveSync in the iPhone", said Ravi Agarwal, chief executive officer of 123Together.com. "This will enable a whole new set of mobile business users to take advantage of Microsoft Exchange as a hosted service and stay connected to their email, calendars and day to day tasks at anytime from any location. This announcement will enable greater implementation of hosted Exchange by iPhone business users as well as increase purchases of iPhones by the mobile workforce."

iPhone users can take immediate advantage of 123Together.com's hosted Exchange service to increase corporate productivity and collaboration. Although two-way wireless synchronization will not be widely available on the iPhone until June, users can take immediate advantage of 123Together.com's hosted Exchange to access their email wirelessly through IMAP in addition to their office PC's, laptops or from any online device via a web browser.

Survey: Most Senior Executives Say We

With Few Exceptions, Senior Executives Say Their Companies Will be Unable to Avoid the Effects of the Recession, According to Boston Consulting Group Survey

Executives Concur that Recession Could Provide Opportunities, Especially for Market Share Gains But Findings Suggest Companies Arent Taking the Right Steps to Capture Opportunities

CHICAGO (Business Wire EON/PRWEB ) March 6, 2008 — Most U.S. business leaders believe the economy is in a recession now, or that one is inevitable within six months. Thats according to a survey conducted by The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) of 101 senior decision makers at U.S. companies with at least $500 million in annual revenues.

Almost every executive (94.9%) who said that a recession is likely believes his or her company will not be able to avoid the effects of the recession.

Companies Already Feeling Recession Squeeze

A total of 53.4% of executives believe that were in a recession now (37.6%), or that we will be within six months (15.8%). While the majority (71.2%) of those who believe were in or near recession say they base their view in part on macro-economic indicators, theyre also feeling the effects in their businesses: 55.9% say their view is based in part on a slowdown in sales, and 30.5% say its based in part on a slowdown in payments to their companies.

Going into the Recession With the Right Perspective

We believe companies should approach signs of a recession as an opportunity to prepare. Downturns magnify relative strengths and weaknesses, so companies that gird themselves intelligently can leverage a change in the dynamics of an industry something that always happens in a recession so that it works in their favor, said Hal Sirkin, global leader of BCGs Operations practice, which spearheaded the research.

In the last recession, 30% of the companies that had been among the top 10 players in their sectors dropped off that list. So, viewed the right way, a downturn presents a strategic opportunity to leapfrog the competition, rather than simply posing a threat, he added.

Recession Trap vs. Recession Opportunity

Indeed, most executives 57.6% said the recession will present opportunities (though 42.4% said it wont). Of those who said it will, 64.7% said the recession will lead to chances for market share gains; 47.1% said it will be an opportunity to implement changes with less internal resistance; and 29.4% said it will provide M&A opportunities.

But Companies that Believe Theyre Prepared May Still Fall Into the Recession Trap

Nearly three-quarters (74.5%) of executives say their companies have taken measures to prepare for the downturn, and 81.3% say theyre at least somewhat confident 23.7% are very confident that their company is better prepared than competitors.

Unfortunately, many of these companies are probably less prepared than they believe and headed for the recession trap. Based on our research, most of the measures these companies say theyre taking 80% of the steps, in fact are conventional and related to cost cutting, said Sirkin, a Chicago-based BCG senior partner. By mainly focusing on cost reduction, theyre not taking advantage of the opportunities a recession can provide. What they need to do is pull out all the stops now so they can move ahead of their competitors soon and be well positioned when business softens further.

The Right Steps to Being Prepared

Mr. Sirkin suggests that companies should begin immediately to determine and measure their risk levels in a downturn; sharpen their downturn radars by setting up early warning systems that look for danger and opportunity; get in shape by doing things like building collaborative partnerships, licensing agreements and outsourcing relationships that reduce risk, keep costs variable and lead to new opportunities; think and act counter-cyclically by taking such steps as giving more service to profitable customers or target accounts and increasing marketing and R&D investments; streamline supply chains; free working capital to reduce debt and interest expense; and get everyone involved in making the most of the downturn by creating a were all in this together environment.

In a recession, everyone feels short-term pain. But companies that successfully approach a recession as an opportunity have the potential to realize long-term gain, said Sirkin.

Note to journalists: Hal Sirkin at The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) is available to discuss the findings in more depth and elaborate on BCGs recommendations for organizations willing to take steps to prepare to leverage a downturn.

Canonical Announces General Availability of Systems Management and Monitoring Tool

Canonical, the commercial sponsor of Ubuntu, announced today the general availability of Canonical Landscape, the systems management and monitoring tool for Ubuntu. Ubuntu users are invited to register for a free trial.

LONDON (PRWEB) March 5, 2008 — Canonical, the commercial sponsor of Ubuntu, announced today the general availability of Canonical Landscape, the systems management and monitoring tool for Ubuntu.

Available for its commercial support customers and as a standalone commercial service, Landscape will provide the growing number of businesses deploying multiple instances of Ubuntu on servers and desktops the means to more easily manage and maintain their systems. Landscape significantly reduces the cost of ownership and maximizes the efficiency of resources for any Ubuntu deployment.

"We are committed to making Ubuntu the right choice for business," said Mark Shuttleworth, founder of the Ubuntu project. "I am delighted that the feedback from the beta programme indicates that Landscape meets that commitment. We challenged the development team to build a tool that was simple to use but powerful for support customers and they delivered. I expect Landscape to drive many more large-scale Ubuntu deployments."

"We have been very impressed by what we have seen in Landscape," said Fredrik Jonsson of ASCI Sweden AB, a participant in the beta programme. "Ubuntu already has an impressive reputation for ease of use, and the growing ecosystem of packages available makes it a great choice for businesses today. Landscape looks like the ideal tool for both managing and monitoring business-scale deployments."

About Landscape
Landscape provides users with a hosted web interface on which all machines are registered. From this single interface, packages and security updates are deployed to the entire network of servers and/or desktops with a single click. Additionally a wealth of monitoring data is provided graphically to the administrator showing process and resource use as well as flagging any available security fixes for the system.

System Management Features:

  • Manage many machines at once: All operations in Landscape can be applied to one or more machines with the same ease.
  • Group machines: Not all machines need to form a single group, machines can be split into multiple groups for different requirements but all can be administered through a single interface.
  • Manage packages across the network: Landscape allows the user to see a package inventory for each computer and allow administrators to install, upgrade, or remove packages from one or more computers.
  • Integrate custom repositories: For users maintaining their own repository — even internally — Landscape can report on and manage the packages in it.
  • Manage users easily: System users may all be managed from a central interface, and may have actions delivered to be performed in one or more systems in a comfortable way.
  • Handle security updates efficiently: Landscape highlights those package upgrades with security fixes (with links to detailed information) ensuring any vulnerabilities are dealt with as quickly as possible.
  • Support disconnected users: Users who disconnect from the network can be handled asynchronously with updates provided when they next get online.
  • System Monitoring Features:

  • Understand system resource usage quickly: Landscape constantly monitors the system's health and performance, and graphs that data in ways that enable a user to quickly pinpoint bottlenecks or other problem areas.
  • Manage processes centrally: A simple web interface displays all the recently active processes running across all systems and enables users to search and manage those centrally.
  • Maintain a detailed hardware inventory: Landscape removes the complexity from hardware inventory by showing complete and easy to understand hardware information for all your systems.
  • Simplify security audits: Auditing and security are simplified with Landscape's detailed history logs that display actions performed by all administrators, even if they were performed locally on the machines themselves without using Landscape.
  • Access full package information: The convenient web interface allows browsing of all packages installed, available, and available for upgrading, on all registered machines, including security notices.
  • Enhanced Support Experience:

  • Streamline exchange of information with the Canonical support team: Canonical support experts receive read-only information on hardware and configurations that will allow them to more rapidly diagnose and resolve tickets.
  • Access the integrated support portal: Administrators can log, view and track support cases right in Landscape, thus providing all management needs in a single convenient location.

Pricing and Availability
Ubuntu users are invited to register for a free trial at www.canonical.com/landscape/register. Trials will be restricted to users who register five or more machines on the system.
