He has his own computer repair business (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ordirodi.com\">OrdiRodi<\/a>) that mainly does Apple Support.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So you receive a call from a client saying <em>\u201cMy hard drive just crashed!!\u201d<\/em> or <em>\u201cI just bought a new Mac and I need to transfer all my information\u201d <\/em> or even <em>\u201cI want to clear my hard drive and do a clean installation\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>As a professional, you need to know exactly what to do to perform a perfect backup and reinstall. You don\u2019t want to lose a client\u2019s files or preferences.  The client wants to have the exact same thing as before: their beautiful Mac, up and running again. They do not want to call you back and say: <em>\u201cHey! I don\u2019t have my music in my iTunes anymore!\u201d<\/em>, <em>\u201cWhere are my bookmarks?\u201d<\/em> or <em>\u201cHow come my icons are smaller?\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the steps to perform a perfect backup and reinstall on OSX using Time Machine. <\/p>\n<div style=\"float:right\">\n<div style=\"width:300px; margin:0 auto;\"> <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.technibble.com\/admanager\/modules\/tracker\/go.php?id=13\" title=\"CommitCRM\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.technibble.com\/admanager\/uploads\/ozEYU9_FYadYP_CommitCRM4.gif\" alt=\"CommitCRM\" style=\"width:300px; height:250px; border:0px;\" \/>  <\/a> <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span><\/span><br \/> First of all, you need to backup everything. With Apple it\u2019s easy.<br \/> There is a built in application called Time Machine and you simply need to plug an empty external drive into the computer (Yes, it must be empty because it will wipe everything on it), and activate Time Machine. <\/p>\n<p>To activate Time Machine, simply open your System Preferences. And click on the Time Machine icon.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.technibble.com\/articlecontent\/2011\/11\/TimeMachine.gif\" alt=\"\" title=\"Time Machine\" width=\"635\" height=\"422\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-8800\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p>Click on \u201cSelect Disk\u201d.<br \/> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.technibble.com\/articlecontent\/2011\/11\/UseBackUpDIsk1.gif\" alt=\"\" title=\"Use Backup Disk\" width=\"635\" height=\"423\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-8803\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p>Choose your external drive and click on \u201cUse Backup Disk\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Time Machine will copy everything (OS, Software, Files, and Preferences) to the external hard drive. So when you will reinstall the OS, you can restore everything from that backup. <\/p>\n<p>Once everything is backed up, we need to clear and format the new hard drive. To do so, you need to have a copy of the OS that you need to install (Snow Leopard or Lion). It can be on either CD or USB, it does not matter.<\/p>\n<p>Shutdown the computer and insert your bootable device into the client\u2019s Mac.<\/p>\n<p>Boot the Mac while holding the \u201cOption\u201d key (ALT key if you are using a non-Apple keyboard). You will arrive on a window where you can choose a bootable device. Please choose your OS Installation (Either CD or USB).<\/p>\n<p>You will then arrive at this window. Choose the language you want and press enter.<br \/> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.technibble.com\/articlecontent\/2011\/11\/Choose-Language1.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Choose Language\" width=\"635\" height=\"638\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-8807\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p>Click on Utilities and choose Disk Utility.<br \/> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.technibble.com\/articlecontent\/2011\/11\/Choose-DiskUtility1.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Choose Disk Utility\" width=\"635\" height=\"467\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-8806\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p>Select the drive you want to format to the left.<br \/> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.technibble.com\/articlecontent\/2011\/11\/DiskUtility.gif\" alt=\"\" title=\"Disk Utility\" width=\"635\" height=\"549\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-8796\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p>On the Erase Tab, use the \u201cFormat\u201d Dropdown and choose \u201cMac OS Extended (Journaled)\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Name your Hard Drive<\/p>\n<p>Click the Erase Button.<\/p>\n<p>It will then take some time to format the hard drive.<\/p>\n<p>Once this is completed, you can close the Disk Utility window and start the installation. It will install the OS on your new hard drive.<br \/> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.technibble.com\/articlecontent\/2011\/11\/OS-Install.gif\" alt=\"\" title=\"OSX Install\" width=\"635\" height=\"495\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-8794\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p>Once the installation is complete, it will reboot and it will start from your newly installed OS.<\/p>\n<p>At the beginning, it will ask you if you want to transfer your information.<br \/> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.technibble.com\/articlecontent\/2011\/11\/Choose-TimeMachine.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Choose Time Machine\" width=\"635\" height=\"553\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-8797\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p>Plug your external device with the Time Machine backup and select \u201cfrom a Time Machine backup\u201d at the \u201cDo You Already Own a Mac?\u201d stage.<\/p>\n<p>It will transfer all the files and settings that Time Machine made a backup of back onto the Mac.<\/p>\n<p>So that is it.
