Post by: Shaun Harris on October 27, 2011, 03:01:06 PM
Anyone have any experience with these types of software and could recommend a certain brand or a couple of good brands?

I've never been able to find any application like this that actually works to be honest.  And I don't want the liability of dealing with it anyway.
That being said, the best option I have found is OpenDNS.  Smart kids can figure out that all they need to do is manually change the DNS settings though.

Nothing is perfect- as Xeno was alluding to in those cartoons he posted kids can and will figure out how to get around just about anything out there.

BTW, the only sensible option is for parents to NOT let kids have PC's in their own rooms or in any private room. The family PC needs to be out in the open where everyone can see exactly what's going on AND, most importantly, the parents need to actually be paying attention and not using the PC as a babysitter.

Probably out of your price range but the last school district I worked for use something called St. Bernard (like the dog). it locked the network down tight as a drum. Drove us on the maintenance site nuts as it kept us from several legit sites we need to get to and the district procedure for getting an exception was a pain too.

there is  nice freebie called K9 Web Protection, good for home use. I use the community edition of Untangle at a school I support, its WebLite filter is basic, but suffices for them.

One trick I showed a friend who let his kid have a PC in his room was UltraVNC. The "I can see your screen anytime without you knowing" threat worked for him.

It really depends on the environment. Are you looking at commercial or residential use?

the appliances I build can be very restrictive, but they are designed more for business - a little expensive for home use. But you can tighten them up so nothing gets through and you can customize the black and whitelists. Blocks executable files too so malware is much harder to get

St Bernard appliances are a pretty nice devices and easy to manage, they provide detailed reporting and you can assign users to different blocking profiles/levels... installed them at sites with 50-300 computers and never any real performance/bottleneck issues.  I haven't set one up recently though.  I've got 3 laying around, they're like 2 years old and pretty worthless as hardware, they give theappliance away it's the subscription thats expensive... way too expensive for home or SOHO.

Open DNS isn't bad for home use, just set the PC and/or router so the kid can't change the DNS.  I've also installed Spectorsoft products at many small offices, no blocking but records everything on a PC and hard to defeat... and cheap enough for home use... both together, "blocking" and "I can see everything you do/done" should be enough of a threat to keep a kid outta the pron... then he'll have to get it the old fashioned way, go to a 24/7 store and buy it.

Kids are curious,,,,which is a good thing.

Whether it is $ex,,,or how a garage door open works, they want to know.

Easy to say,,,,but difficult to do,,,,,Education is the key

They will find a way, regardless of what we do

Maybe I was a weird kid (well, ok, I was a weird kid) but I was far more interested in knowing how a garage door opener worked than I was about sex.

I didn't have a garage, but it was obvious how the barn doors opened. Brute force. :)

From the sound of the majority of your posts, it seems like you are still that way, whether by choice or not is another story.

Well, I was also a kid in the age (as with almost all of us here) before Internet pr0n (or Internet itself for that matter).

That is true.  I'm really not all that interested in that or relationships to be honest.  I think it's served me quite well overall.
The only downside is not having a family/kids.  Once I'm gone then my family bloodline stops as my younger brother doesn't have kids or a relationship either.

Now, get back to me in 20 years and ask me if I still feel the same way.

I had one child, then sent her mom packing. So, I get to live the single life yet still have someone to take care of me when I get old (payback for all those diapers I changed when she was a baby).

Heck Tomato on the router does a decent job of monitoring without even smart kids really thinking of it.... we have that setup on a lot of networks, it just emails them a list with the IP's etc.... block proxy servers and it's even better, now granted it doesn't stop alot (depending upon setup) but it's a free or cheap option too...

This is a residential and a mom who is not tech savvy at all, she wants an assist in keeping an I on a daughter (no father figure).

Simplest way to do this is to put the computer in a common room where it can be watch by the mother and the daughter has to give all of her passwords and user name to her mother too. The mother then just checked the sites the daughter goes too and if the daughter starts hiding thing, she loses computer privileges.

That's what I did with my daughter, she hated it but I knew everything that she did online.

This is the cheapest program out there and it's called "Active Parenting".
