Title: Ubuntu 11.04 really sucks....
Post by: Nathan Williams on May 21, 2011, 12:26:20 PM
Ok finally got around to loading the new version of Ubuntu on a system.   Is it just me or does this new Unity desktop really suck?    Maybe time to move to a new distro.   Haven't played with Mint in a while and that is based on Ubuntu so that maybe where I am heading.

Well, I don't know about you.   :D

However, can you tell us what in particular you don't like about Unity?  I was just getting ready to update my training/demo box from 10.04, so maybe if I know what bugs you I can see more clearly...

Haven't played much with it yet but it is far different then the traditional menus.   You have a dock bar at the left that you can't move, though it does auto hide.  I like dock bars and use AWN which to me is much more configurable.

The applications button on Unity brings up windows with big icons and only a few choices.   Finding a program that isn't used much by you means lots of drilling down through enormous screens.   For light users that dumber then dirt(the typ Windows end user... ^-^ ) it might be beneficial.  But I don't see any real ability to customize or turn off some of this needless junk.   It reminds me of the Microsoft 2007/2010 Office ribbon on steroids.   It's bugging me enough to seriously consider rolling back to 10.10 or ditching Ubuntu altogether.

Sounds more like Mac if you really want to know the truth.

Yes it is definitely heading in that direction and has been for some time.

Decent and mostly positive review but does highlight my biggest annoyance with Unity.

If I say 'no comment', does that mean I really am making a comment?

I didn't find it anything like Mac OS X. When is the last time you used a Mac?

I tried Ubuntu, and I agree, I don't like it either.

I'm not talking so much about the look and feel- I'm talking about the unified menu thingy at the top and the bar at the left (which is at the bottom on a Mac).
The way Unity works is much more like Mac than it is Windows.

That first review sounds more like something written by a Mac user than an Ubuntu loyalist. The inconsistencies between apps and the main interface are something I appreciate when working with different programs between vendors, it helps me assess where I am and where I mean to be when I look away from the screen, especially while typing, entering sums, or holding a conversation.

I don't get a warm and fuzzy feeling when using, well, Chrome under Windows and it looks and acts more like Internet Explorer(especially 9, *shudders*) than it does Chrome under Linux, I get annoyed. In fact, the handful of things I can't do in Chrome under Linux, I don't WANT my browser to do under any operating system. OTOH, I could raise the same complaint these reviewers do about MEPIS with FireFox(I have to fix file associations from within the browser itself, what up with that?), except that wait, I don't use that broken browser(though I need to update it if I understand Russ latest reviews) and I don't let my operating system choose my application experience(with the exceptions of Android and paid environments).

The Dock on Mac OS X can be bottom, left or right, and is fully customizable. You put whatever you want in it, apps, folders, etc.

The unified menu I haven't explored much in Ubuntu, but the mac has always had standard menus, which is a good thing. File, edit, view menus are the same in every app, which is a good thing. No searching for commands. Every Mac application has the same menus, plus their own added menus for any items which don't fit the standard menus.

It may be more like Mac than Windows, but it isn't much like Mac either, at least from the few minutes I spent looking at it. I'll try to check it out more when I get caught up from my trip to Tennessee.

My experience with 11.04 has been remarkably smooth so far.
