HP "Certified"
Tom Bozeman:
Do you guys know of any way an IC or small business can become HP Certified?
It is my understanding that in order to become an Authorized Service center there is a large requirement for selling product.
Although I know of at least one large service provider who has HP Certified techs, which allows them to perform warranty services. I am not sure how they are allowed to do that when they sell no product, but obviously they have some type of agreement with HP.
Tom Bozeman:
I should have looked harder before I posted. They have so many certifications it is ridiculous,,,,
RoboGeek:
well.. I went to a 3 day school in long beach to become HP Certified to repair LJ II printers. Its a lifetime cert so I still call myself HP certified. And your right, nowadays you have to sell $500,000/yr or something to become an authorized dealer or repair center.. not sure which
Tom Bozeman:
One of my biggest customers, a National Provider for whom I cover "White Space", suddenly demands that I send HP Certified techs to service a large insurance company with offices throughout the MidWest and Northeast.
I have covered this client for years, using my current techs. I get the parts from HP, under warranty, but I get no OEM reimbursement, so they pay for my labor.
If they try to cover these sites with HP Certified techs they will pay a premium rate, and some very excessive travel.
Program Managers who do not understand all the intricacies of providing warranty service drive me crazy.
If they simply flip the calls over to HP, they will wait days for service, and the techs I use provide total service, not just replace the part and leave.

I had looked in to trying to become an HP authorized service centera few years ago. I quickly found out that was not going to happen. As Robo said you have to commit to a HUGE reseller commitment as well as pony up a good amount of cash just to have the privilege of buying from them (I think it's $1,000 per year to be an HP reseller now- something like that). In the past you just had to sell $x amount each year (a very large number). Now, however, you have to pay HP just to be a reseller.
Screw that nonsense. To be warranty certified requires even more. There are very few HP certified warranty providing companies out there- a small handfull if that.
